| THE WICKENBURG SUN THE WEEK OF APRIL 16, 2003 Ruth McGhee Vannish, 102, was born Jan. 20, 1901 in Mississippi. She passed away March 5, 2003 in Modesto, Calif. Although Ruth moved to Modesto, Calif. more than 20 years ago to be with her nephew and family, her heart remained in Wickenburg. She was born the daughter of Albert and Martha Draper. Martha Draper would return to Mississippi to give birth to children. Then she returned to Arizona when they were one or two. Ruth was preceded in death by her brothers, Howard M. Draper, which the American Legion Post was co-named after. He died in World War I on Sept. 5, 1918. She was also preceded in death by her brother Albert Wren Draper in June of 1946 and her husband Alexander Vannish in December of 1961. Ruth grew up in Wickenburg and went to school to become a teacher. She graduated from the University of Arizona in 1925. She taught school in Arizona for 43 years. The last five years or more were spent in the Peoria School District at a one-room schoolhouse where she taught eight grades at once. Those were said to be her happiest years. She retired in June of 1968 due to her progressing arthritis. Ruth held one of the Lifetime Teaching Certificates for Arizona. Ruth enjoyed making quilts and visiting with dear old friends after she retired from teaching. She also retained her love of children and animals. Ruth is survived by her nephew Howard Ray Draper and wife Lynda and their five children and their families, all of Modesto, Calif.; niece Gloria Ann Draper Buel and her husband Ronald Buel and their four children and their families, all of the Kenwick, Washington area. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, April 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the Wickenburg Municipal Cemetery. Pastor Dean Stanley will officiate.
