Louis Thomas Shields

Louis Thomas Shields, 90, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004 at the Arizona Pioneer's Home in Prescott.

He was born Nov. 9, 1913 in Bowie, Ariz., the son of Frank and Florence (Riggs) Shields.

Louis worked all his life as an Arizona pioneer cattleman, rancher and miner. He worked on the Poland tunnel in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He also worked with the U.S. Forest Service fighting fires. He was a true conservationist.

Louis was good lion hunter. He was a perfectionist and noted wild cattle roper and gatherer. He was reared and schooled in the Wagoner area.

A native Arizonan, Louis spent the last 15 years of his life on the family ranch at Wagoner. He loved working with cattle and breaking horses and was known for his abilities.

Louis rode until he was 86 years old. He was married to the late Lydia Calkins in 1934.

Louis is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Barbara and Edwin Davis of Wagoner, Dixie and Dave Croft of Clearlake Oaks, Calif., and son-in-law Tom O'Connell of Winslow, Ariz. He is also survived by his grandchildren Mona, Cindy, Chip, Dan, Ron, Tammy, Tom, Shawn, Jim and Matthew; and his great-grandchildren Jesse, Davis, Blake, Lydiann, Audra, Andrew, Samantha, Amanda, Savanna, Skye, E.J., Vernon, Justin, Haylee, Trey, Savhanna and Joshua. Louis is also survived by three great-great-grandchildren Cloey, Shanelle, and Braydon. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lydiann O'Connell.

A celebration of Louis' life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 9) at the Walnut Grove Church on Wagoner Road in Wagoner, Ariz., with Elder Dan Owsley of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints officiating.

A private cremation was held at Bradshaw Crematory in Prescott Valley.

Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with Louis' final arrangements.
