Orson LeRoy (Pete) Penrod

Posted 2009-07-13 by Sharla
Orson LeRoy "Pete" Penrod left this world from his home in Show Low as the sun rose and the birds sang on the morning of May 22, 2004. He was 70 years old.

Pete was born in Pinetop July 31, 1933, and lived in the White Mountains for 48 years of his life. After leaving home at age 14, he lived as a cowboy and ranch hand, working for many White Mountain ranchers, including John Wayne.

Pete served our country in the National Guard, Army and served in the Air Force during the Korean War, receiving three medals. After the Armed Forces, Pete worked as a local logger, and worked at the local paper mill. Most of his life he was an outstanding automotive mechanic and parts specialist, and worked in the White Mountains, Nevada, and California. He owned/operated an automotive repair shop in Snowflake/Taylor in the 1960s.

Pete met and married the love of his life in Show Low in 1987, after which he worked as a real estate agent until his retirement.

Pete was a wonderful man with a million jokes and stories and had an easy smile. He was an example of human character and loving actions, influencing those around him to be better people. Much of the history of this area went with him. He is terribly missed, and will never be forgotten. Pete died in his 17th year of sobriety.

Pete was preceded in death by his mother, Sena Gillespie; his father, "Penny" Penrod;, and his brother, "Bunky" Penrod.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Penrod; son Bart Bradley, as well as numerous relatives in the White Mountain area.

Fletcher's Mortuary made the arrangements. Pete's family would like to express extreme gratitude to RTA Hospice for their kind attention, and ask that in lieu of flowers, please make donations to RTA Hospice.

A memorial service was held at Woodland Park.
