It is with much sadness we announce the death of Manuel "Shorty" Macias on Sunday, March 29 in Wickenburg. He was born Oct. 12, 1931 to Manuel and Concepcion Macias. His great-grandfather Ramon Macias, in 1857, established the 6M Ranch where his grandfather and father were born and raised. As a native son, he enjoyed his life with two sisters, Nadine and Ersie, along with many cousins. He attended school at the Little Red Schoolhouse, and in high school he played on the 1951 Wranglers six-man football team, which won the Arizona Football Championship. He served in the Navy on the USS Repose during the Korean War. In 1953 he married Carmelita Castro, and together they raised five children: Julia, Debora, Michael, Frank, and Alex. He loved his family and friends and was there for them in good times and bad. He loved to hunt, work, dance and have fun. In 1991 he married Arlene (Dolly) Vogtlander, and for 18 years they have enjoyed each other in their many travels and had a great marriage. Shorty spent his entire career as a heavy equipment operator in the Wickenburg area and throughout the state. He was admired for his operating skills and was well respected in the community. Shorty was preceded in death by his wife Carmelita, his parents Manuel and Concepcion, and his brother-in-law Bruce Champlin. He is survived by his wife Dolly and stepchildren Tommy (Jessica) and Susie Vogtlander; sisters Nadine Champlin and Ersie (Ervan) Randolph; and his children Julie (Art) Brooks, Debora (Don) Griffiths, Mike (Terry) Macias, Frank (Ranee) Macias, and Alex (Julie) Macias; grandchildren Michael Brooks, Lisa Jefferson, Mike and Meghan Stanaland, Michael Macias, Channing, Tyler, and Trever Macias, Kyle and Morgan Macias; step-grandchildren Mychael and Sarah Vogtlander. He was a great-grandfather to Hayley and Evelyn Jefferson, Jade Vaughn Macias, and Meka Vogtlander. Shorty is survived by many cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends. A public viewing and Rosary will be held on Friday (April 3) at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday (April 4) at St. Anthony's Catholic Church followed by services at the Wickenburg Cemetery. Shorty was a charter member of the Wickenburg Elks Lodge BPOE 2160, and his reception will be held at the lodge after the services.
