Murray Wentworth

The family wishes to announce the passing of Murray Wentworth on April 18.

Murray was born in his family home on North Jefferson Street in Wickenburg, Ariz., on April 6, 1917. He was raised in Wickenburg and resided in Wickenburg until he enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 as a combat engineer. During his three and a half years with the United States Army Corps of Engineers, he fought in the Africa Campaign, then through Sicily and Italy. His unit was then sent to Normandy, France, and finished the war at the Rhine River in Germany.

Following his duty in the service, Murray returned to Wickenburg where he worked as a heavy equipment operator. He purchased a vacant lot on South Jefferson Street and built a home. In 1955 he married Maraloyd Abbuhl. They were married for 47 years prior to her death in 2003.

Murray lived on Jefferson Street in Wickenburg for 91 years. He lived at My Father's Retirement Ranch on North Jefferson Street for three years before transferring to Sterling House of Peoria for the last year of his life.

Murray helped build more than 40 golf courses in Arizona and around the southwest, including Wickenburg Country Club, Papago Golf Club and many of the Sun City courses. He loved his work, his family and the people of Wickenburg. He was famous for helping his family, friends and neighbors. When they needed anything, he was always there.

Murray is survived by his stepchildren Richard Abbuhl and Elaine Carlson; nieces Susie Wentworth, Roseanne Moran, and Sharon Kennison; nephew Robert Wentworth; grandchildren Alan Davis, Shelly Wagner, and Ricky Abbuhl; and great-grandchildren Dimitri Davis, Josh Davis, Adriane Wagner, and Katie Wagner. He was preceded in death by his brothers Robert Wentworth and Tom Wentworth, and two grandchildren Bill Abbuhl and Dianne Abbuhl.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday (April 25) at Wickenburg Municipal Cemetery. A memorial service celebrating the life of Murray Wentworth will be held at a later date.

Murray was much loved and will be missed by his family, friends and the community. Arrangements are under the direction of Wickenburg Funeral Home & Crematory.

Wentworth memorial Sunday

The memorial service for Murray Wentworth will be held at Coffinger Park at noon on Sunday, June 14 with lunch to follow. All friends are invited to attend.

Murray Wentworth, a lifetime resident of Wickenburg, Ariz., passed away on April 18.
