Narciso (Shorty) Hernandez Sr., 92, retired Bagdad miner, died Feb. 7, 2004. at Arizona Pioneers' Home in Prescott.

Services are at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Wickenburg. Burial is in Wickenburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Arizona Pioneers' Home.
Visitation was planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Wickenburg Funeral Home.

Shorty Hernandez was born Oct. 22, 1911 at Hidalgo del Parrel, Chihuahua, Mexico. He came to the United States with his brother Jesus when he was about 7 years old. They drove a car from Parrel, Mexico to El Paso, Texas, where they lived for a time before moving to Prescott, Ariz. Shorty grew up in Prescott and attended the Lincoln School on Park Avenue. He spent his last years only blocks away from Lincoln School at the Arizona Pioneers' Home.

Shorty worked at the Bagdad Copper Mine for most of his adult life. He started out as an underground miner in 1938, and worked his way up to a diamond core driller. In later years he worked as a painter at the town site. At age 65 he retired and purchased a home in Wickenburg where he lived until he moved to the Pioneers' Home in April of 2000.

He was an avid jogger and runner, even before it was popular. In his 50s and 60s he could be seen running up and down the hills of Bagdad. After his retirement, he walked, jogged, and ran the streets of Wickenburg. He won numerous running trophies, and at one time was the Arizona state 10k champion in his age bracket.

Another of his favorite activities was driving his 1960 Plymouth in parades in Wickenburg, Congress, and other outlying communities. He was always proud of the fact that he bought that Plymouth brand new in 1960 and kept it in pristine condition until the day he couldn't parade it anymore.

He and his wife Frances (Garcia), who passed away in 1983, raised five fine children, Narciso Jr., Richard, Ramona (Schmit), Maria (Stevens), and Fred Austin.

Shorty is survived by his five children, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A letter from Shorty to his friends

I want to thank all my friends for coming and sharing my last day on this earth with my special family and my many friends.

I must apologize for not getting to say goodbye to you. I want you to know that it has been people like you and my other friends that have made me a winner in this life. I want you to know that I have been touched in a special way by knowing you. Please don't be sad that this time has been selected for me to leave my family and friends. I do not feel sad about having to leave. I have completed all of my tasks on this earth. I now have been given another type of work to do. It will be a new beginning for me. I look forward to my new job.

Thank you for letting me get to know you. I bid you farewell, and I wish you a life full of love.
Your friend, Shorty
