Carol Marie (Young) Miller passed away July 8. She was born Dec. 24, 1935.

Surrounded by her loved ones, Carol ascended peacefully on Wednesday, July 8.

Carol’s unconditional love, faith, strength, kindness, phenomenal friendships, generosity and compassion leaves her family and friends extremely grateful to have been able to share life’s earthly journey with her. While her courageous battle with lung cancer took its toll on her body, her spirit stayed strong, as she said God had given her peace.

Carol, known by family and friends as Nani, was born in Phoenix, Ariz., to Marie Pearl and Joseph John Young; she shared her parents with sisters Joan Barth and Valerie Echeverria (Julio). With blended families, she shared siblings Jacque Driskill Moody (Bill), Jeff Young (Debbie), Jenny Goldman and Marion Gray (Ron).

She spent her youth growing up between Phoenix, Ariz.; Venice, Calif.; Compton, Calif.; and Wickenburg, Ariz. She graduated from Wickenburg High School in 1953. At age 16, Carol married her sweetheart Karl Alden Miller in Wickenburg on Oct. 10, 1952. They shared and survived 58 years together! They brought forth four children who adore her: Karla Kelley, Lisa Owings (Mike), Cheri Kelley (Dan), and Karl G. She is the grandmother of Joshua Landers, Anthony Miller-Pritt, Andrea Miller-Kelley (Dan S.), Erin Miqu/ Kelley, Micah Kelley and Willow Owings, as well as great-grandchild Daniel Lee Smith. Each grandchild formed his or her own special bond with their Nani. She will be greatly missed by all, including her in-laws, numerous nieces, nephews and their families, cousins and friends.

Carol enjoyed a variety of jobs during her 58 years in Wickenburg. In the earlier years she worked for Jones Pharmacy, Bryant’s Variety and Mexicali Caf/. Avon was her passion for a time, which enabled her to visit friends and family with her children in tow. Her career of 11 years with Safeway gave her the pleasure of independence and accomplishment, while working with people she thoroughly enjoyed. Her next career began at the Wickenburg Community Hospital in 1974 as a nurse’s aide, while taking correspondence courses for nursing through Phoenix College, where she made straight As. For about two years she was also a volunteer EMT with the Wickenburg Ambulance Service. After being told that her back would not tolerate the demands of a nursing career, her persistent nature continued to lead her to accept a position at the Wickenburg Community Hospital as a medical records transcriptionist in 1980. She thrived professionally and personally for 12 years. She created long-lasting friendships that have continued since her retirement in 1992.

In Carol’s younger years she enjoyed swimming, dancing, going to the movies every Saturday and sports like softball, especially when she was playing with the “Sara Janes”. She found pleasure in her later years baking, cake decorating, canning, gardening, ceramics, sewing, needlepoint, and crocheting an afghan for each child, grandchild, and babies of extended family and friends. She was a voracious reader, and favored medical mysteries. She loved nature, her countless family pets, hummingbirds, angels and unicorns.

We will miss most just hanging out with her, laughing, joking and teasing each other until we’re in tears and exhausted! We’ll miss her ever-present smile, her heartfelt talks with wise advice, and her generous heart that gave whatever was needed. Some of our favorite times were reminiscing about good times and always coming to the conclusion that the even the bad times had their purpose for growth. Last but not least, we’ll miss talking with her about nothing and everything.

One thing she longed to do was swim with the dolphins. Now her spirit is free to roam and our hopes are that she rides the waves on the back of a dolphin until she reaches the light and love of the heavens, meets with all the loved ones who have gone before, and rests in the presence of pure and perfect love with God, whom she trusted to have a place for her to dwell in everlasting life.

A heartfelt thank you to all who were involved in the wonderful care of my wife, our mother, and our Nani.

A memorial Mass will be said for Carol on Saturday, July 18 at 1 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Wickenburg. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of the Valley. Arrangements are under the direction of Wickenburg Funeral Home & Crematory.
