Margaret Jean Cox

We never knew our mother. Sure, we knew the basic statistics. Born in the opening of a silver mine on the Salmon River in central Idaho in 1927. Working nights as a telephone operator at age 16 to help support her family. Graduating from Boise High school and then Boise College and then marrying our father in 1948. Bearing and raising three rowdy boys, Steve, Dan, and Dave. Working as a controller for Singer-Frieden, Ramada Hotels and finally the Marriott Country Club Division. Surviving the death of our father in 1997, her lung disease, heartache and disappointment.

Surely, we knew her, but not until the last few years did we discover that she was not just our mother. She was a woman, once a little girl with pigtails. A blooming teen with boyfriends at the door, suitors, fiances and lovers. Dreams, desires and hopes. Even though we have learned so much about her these past few years, we are still amazed to peer back into our past seeing her building and living her life. See her bringing each of us into life. Gently guiding us through our lives. Patiently listening to our woes. Sharing our fears and sorrows while, somehow managing our father. Supporting our family in desperate times while somehow finding the time to build and live her own life.

Yes, we know her better now but realize we have just begun to appreciate the life she lived and the lives she nurtured. So much more to learn but, now she is gone.

Margaret Jean Cox quietly passed away at Sun Health Hospice on Oct. 5, 2005. Before she slipped away, she asked us to thank all of you for being her friend and sharing her life.

Jean was survived by her sons Steve, Dan, and Dave, her daughter-in-law Carlotta, her big brother Don Baker, little sister Maryanne, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Jean will be greatly missed. Services will be private.
