The Bismarck Tribune, Bismarck, North Dakota Tuesday, July 28, 1998 Howard J. Haas, 85, Precott, Ariz., died July 25, 1998, in a Prescott nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Ben Dove officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, at Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home, Prescott. Howard was born on June 10, 1913, in Sharon Springs, Kan. to Adam and Carrie Haas. He graduated from Kansas State University with bachelor's and master's degrees in soils. In 1936, he accepted a position with the U.S.D.A. at the Garden City, Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station. In 1937, Mr. Haas married Evelyn Wagner of Garden City, and they remained there until 1942 when he was transferred to the Northern Great Plains Research Center, Mandan. Mr. Haas was nationally and internationally recognized as an authority in water conservation and soil fertility for dryland crop production in the Great Plains. He received the Department of Agriculture Outstanding Work Performance Award in 1962, the Outstanding Professional Conservationist Award in 1962 from the Soil Conservation Society of America and the degree of fellowship in the Soil Conservation Society of America in 1964. In 1972, he retired and with Evelyn, moved to Prescott and Yavapai Hills in 1978. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Prescott. Mr. Haas liked to do woodworking and carpentry. He also enjoyed traveling since his retirement. He was a gentle, kind, loving and extremely generous husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed doing for others and they always came first. He is survived by his loving and caring wife Evelyn of 61 years; one son, Russell, Bismarck; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
