Homer Allen, Jr. Baker

Homer Allen Baker Jr., 88, passed away July 10, 2009. He was born Sept. 26, 1920, in Salina, Kan., to Gertrude and Homer Baker.

He was preceded in death by Doris, his wife of 66 years, and one grandson. He is survived by daughters Cheryl Williams and Linda Bradley; son Gary Baker; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Palmer.

Homer was a proud 30-year Air Force veteran, serving in three wars before retiring as a Colonel in 1971. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Army Air Corps in 1941 and served as flight commander doing photo reconnaissance in Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands, flying P-38 aircraft and logging 80 missions totaling 200 combat hours flying the B-29 bomber. Among Col. Baker's other assignments were the Pentagon, USAF Academy in Germany and Japan, and as Base Commander in Nha Trang, Vietnam, Williams AFB, Chandler, and Moody AFB in Valdosta, Ga., before retiring to Phoenix and Prescott. Colonel Baker's decorations include the Legion of Merit, Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Gallantry Cross, and the Air Force Commendation Medal.

A private family service will be on July 22, 2009, at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. Donations in his honor can be made to American Cancer Research, c/o Lung Cancer Research, 4550 E. Arrangements have been entrusted to Valley of the Sun Mortuary, Chandler, Arizona.
