Camp Verde Bugle, Camp Verde, Arizona Wednesday, July 08, 2009 William Matthew Oates, 84, of Cottonwood, died July 7. He was born July 9, 1924, in Nortonville, Kentucky, the son of Esmer Francis Oates and Willie Blackburn Oates. He graduated from Nortonville schools. He served his country as a Major in the Air Force serving during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, receiving numerous medals and citations. Mr. Oates was a member of Nortonville Christian Church and enjoyed model trains. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Oates is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sylvia Oates; a son Philip M. Oates (Valli) of Arizona; daughters, Mary Margaret Black (Paul) of Tennessee, Elizabeth Ann Bishop of Cailfornia, Patricia Sue of Romney (Jerry) of Nevada and Janet Kay Havens of Arizona; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
