The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ Feb. 22, 2002, p. A22 Joan E. Kudela was born Aug. 5, 1934 in Lorain, Ohio. She passed away on Jan. 29, 2002 in Wickenburg at the age of 67. Joan was the daughter of Mildred Horton of Washington, Ind., and a graduate of Clearview High School. Joan met her soon-to-be husband Anthony at the Lorain, Ohio, roller rink. Joan was 17, and Tony was 18. When Tony got out of the service, they eloped to Angola, Ind., in order to avoid all the haggle and hassle. They did what they wanted to do. They married on Jan. 12, 1957, and the marriage lasted a wonderful 45 years. Prior to their marriage, Joan started showing horses in 1956 and continued until 1982, at one time owning eight horses. She did this with lots of help from friends. It was a passion. Through the coming years, Joan battled many life-threatening illnesses and yet still enjoyed the pleasure of life. In 1979, she had surgery for a brain aneurysm and was hospitalized for seven weeks. 1984 brought a move to Arizona for the couple, settling in Wickenburg due to her arthritis. Joan then did volunteer work at the Wickenburg Library for several years, and it is her wish that any donations may be made in her name to the Wickenburg Library. In 1995, she was in an automobile accident and had extensive foot surgery. In 1999, Joan had surgery for uterine cancer. Following the surgery, Joan and Tony moved to a new home in Congress, Ariz., in October of 1999. One year later, Joan had to go through surgery again. This time for an aortic aneurysm. Joan and her husband shared a love for horses, dogs and yard sales. She is survived by her husband Tony of Congress; mother Mildred Horton of Washington, Ind.; brother Glen Gene Horton of Washington, Ind.; nephew Mark Horton of Lorain, Ohio; and nieces Michelle and Whitney Wheeler. Graveside services and interment were held Friday, Feb. 8 at the Wickenburg Municipal Cemetery. Wickenburg Funeral Home handled the arrangements. See Also: Find A Grave |
