The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ March 6, 2002, p. A7 LeVaun Pearl Berg Taylor was born March 22, 1912 in Basalt, Idaho, the 10th child of John Hansen and Nicoline Clemensen Berg. She died Feb. 28 in Provo, Utah, at the age of 90. LeVaun was raised in Idaho where she graduated from high school and obtained a nursing degree. In 1941 she traveled to Alaska to serve as a nurse for the troops fighting the Japanese in the Aleutian Islands. While in Alaska she met Maynard Taylor, who was serving in the Army Corps of Engineers. They were married in Seward, Alaska on April 4, 1944. They settled immediately in Anchorage where they resided until retiring in Arizona in 1979. During her 35 years in Alaska, LeVaun worked as a nurse and as a secretary for her husband's architectural firm. She was active in community projects, especially while her husband was Mayor of Anchorage, from 1952-56. She was a member of the LDS church. She was involved with community organizations that included Eastern Star, Lady Elks, Chugach Range Riders and Pioneers of Alaska. In 1976, her husband and his partner, Bill Bittner, developed the Paso Del Sol subdivision in Congress. LeVaun and Maynard built a home there and spent time between Arizona and Alaska, until his death in 1992. LeVaun became very active in the LDS church in Wickenburg. In 1996, she suffered a stroke. For the past six years she was cared for by her daughter-in-law, Sasha Wayas, and her granddaughter, Noelani Wayas. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Maynard Loren Taylor, Jr., who died in 1992 and her four sisters, Anna Jensen, Ida McCurdy, Adlia Andrus and Elida Brown; seven brothers, Lorenzo, Joseph, Charles, LeMaun, Paul, Newell and Ross Berg; and one grandson, Abel Taylor. She is survived by one brother, John Berg of Firth, Idaho; two sons, Tom Taylor of Trapper Creek, Alaska and Maynard L. Taylor III of Anchorage, Alaska; one daughter, Toni Wayas of Congress, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, Richard Wayas, Aaron Wayas, Rustin Wayas, Kevin Wayas, Noelani Wayas, Brian Wayas, Amy Wayas, Ryan Taylor, Erin Taylor, Hallie Taylor and Connor Taylor; and two great-grandchildren, Kolbe and Kyle Wayas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9 at the LDS church in Wickenburg. Burial will follow at the Wickenburg Municipal Cemetery. Frey Funeral Home handled all the arrangements.
