Zane Winters of Congress, died April 19 in Sun City West. He was 79.
He was born in Kelso, Wash. on Feb. 26, 1925. He spent most of his younger years in Oregon.

He had lived for the past 22 years in Arizona.
When Zane heard about Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, he was lying in the hospital recovering from a broken leg. As soon as he could, he and his best friend, since he was 6 years old, went out and "joined up."

He remained best friends with Hal Dove all of his life and even managed to keep in touch throughout the war. Zane joined the Army Corps and was a glider and C-47 pilot. He was a member of the "Silent Wings" Pilot Association and a member of the VFW.

Zane flew freight and passengers all over Europe and Africa for the European Air Transport. He was responsible for the maintenance of all aircraft entering and leaving the air base in the European Theater. Zane was also part of the Rhine Crossing as a glider pilot.
After the war he helped transport prisoners of war. He was awarded the American Theater Service Medal, European, African and Middle East Service Medal, with three Bronze Stars, and the Arrowhead World War II Victory Medal.

After the war Zane had many occupations. The last 17 years, he was a rest area manager. He met many interesting people and was a friend to all.

He hardly ever turned anyone down. Stray animals and sometimes stray people came home with him.

For many years Zane was a rockhound or "prospector," always looking in old mine shafts, "diggings," and panning black sand in different washes throughout Oregon and Arizona.

Zane was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Wickenburg.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Sue, of Congress; sons Michael Winters of Longview, Wash., and Norman Winters of Colorado Springs, Colo.; stepchildren Robert Valdez of Wickenburg, Rose Turowski of Pinetop, and Lena Palmer of Ft. Mohave; sister Marian Wilkins of Hawaii; brothers Colin Winters of Kennewick Wash. and Roger Winters of Colorado Springs; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
His father, mother, and youngest son Thomas, as well as his first wife Mildred, preceded him in death.

Services were held on Friday, April 26 at Frey Funeral Home.
