MIKKELSEN, W.H. - W.H. “Mike” Mikkelsen, age 88, passed away at his home in Mohave Valley on November 6, 2007, following a lengthy well-fought battle with lung disease and diabetes. Mike was born in Cutbank, Montana June 21, 1919, but graduated from both high school and college in California.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1939, serving as a Chief Bosun Mate and hard-hat diver, before retiring in 1959. Not even his vivid memories of the attack on Pearl Harbor while he was on duty there detracted from his love of the Navy and his shipmates. A passion for boats and outdoor living prompted Mike and his wife Kay to purchase a large lot in Mohave Valley in 1973 while they were working and living in Downey, California.

They moved there permanently in 1979 within days of their retirement. Not only did they make full use of the nearby lake and river, while building their home, but they traveled extensively, often combining their trips with RVing and square dancing.

Mike continued his love for the service and was a life member of Pearl Harbor Survivors Assn., Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6306, American Legion, and Fleet Reserve Assn. With failing health, he also was a charter member of the local Pulmonary Support Group, continuing to offer assistance to them even after he was unable to attend meetings.

A high point in recent years was a surprise 87th birthday party attended by both the support group and the Pearl Harbor Survivors, which landed Mike on the front page of the local Daily News.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Kay Mikkelsen; a friend, who is so special that Mike described him as his “adopted son“, Buster Sounder of Mohave Valley; and a half-brother Eugene Hendricksen of Renton, Washington; along with numerous other friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Desert Lawn Funeral Home, 9250 S. Ranchero Lane, on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 11:00 A.M.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Mike's name to Mohave Desert Veteran Memorial, c/o V.F.W. 6306, 12858 Oatman Highway, Topock, AZ 86436.
