OBITUARY: Earl Walter Caldwell Sept. 8, 1922 - Oct. 8, 2008 Wednesday, October 15, 2008 12:04 PM MST Earl Walter Caldwell, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Wednesday in Lake Havasu City. He was born September 8, 1922, in Independence, Iowa. Following graduation from Independence High School in 1939 he stayed on the family farm before moving to Davenport, Iowa to continue his education at St. Ambrose College. In 1942 Earl entered the Second World War serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations. In 1946 he married his fiancé of two years, Phylliss Crowl. Earl was a loving father of three sons - Randy, Jay, and Jon, and a grandfather to five - Leigh, Casie, Arianna, Jason, and Andrey. His kindness, selflessness, and patience strengthened his family through their move from Iowa to New York as he advanced with Sperry Rand Univac. After leaving Univac, he was an early employee at two computer related companies. He was awarded several computer patents during his career while somehow finding time to build barns, log his land of ash trees that would become professional baseball bats, build and operate the Dolgeville "sugar shack" to make maple syrup, and for seven years serve as the President of the local school board of education. He led a life of service to his family, country, and community. While the major events of his life can be measured by dates, his true legacy was in his selfless commitment to others beginning with his wife, of 62 years, Phylliss. In 1985 Earl and Phylliss retired to travel before moving to Lake Havasu City in 1990. Earl was a hardworking man, full of kind words and gentle thoughts. He could fix anything and could never sit still. He loved to putter in his work shop, play pool at the Senior Center, and trap and skeet shoot at the Lake Havasu Sportsmen's Club. He had an active and loving relationship with all of his children and most importantly his wife until the very end. He is a man that will be missed by all but who will not fade from our memories. We are of the opinion that a famous footwear company got it wrong with its advertising slogan. If it were "Be like Earl", the world would be a kinder, better place. Earl's legacy is that he lived his life exemplifying the saying, "What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal." Earl will be interred at Lake Havasu Memorial Gardens Saturday 3:00 p.m. See Also: Find A Grave |
