Elizabeth (Askins) Guitteau

Elizabeth Askins GUITTEAU, 97, passed away March 15, 2003. She was born June 9, 1905 in Douglas, Arizona territory, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth ASKINS, Irish immigrants, who preceded her in death.

She graduated from Tempe Normal (now ASU) in 1925 and the University of Arizona in 1928.

She married Paul E. GUITTEAU and they were together until his death in 1993.

They began their teaching careers in Thatcher, AZ where he became Supt. of schools. She was active in PTA, 4-H Clubs, and served as president of the Safford Women's Club. In 1945 they moved to Tucson when Paul became Supt. of Amphitheater Schools. She continued her leadership roles in 4-H Clubs, Girl Scouts and Pilots Club International, serving as local president and District Governor. She was also active in church work at Sacred Heart.

In 1951 they moved back to Thatcher when Paul was named President of Eastern Arizona College. She taught school in Thatcher & Ft. Thomas. She was active in the Safford Emblem Club and served as their District Governor. While living there she served as president of the sodality of the Catholic Church and was president of Deanery of Graham and Greenlee Counties. On retirement they moved back to Tucson where they both were very active with the Catholic Church. Paul worked for the Tucson Diocese and eventually became Supt. of the Tucson Diocese Schools. In 1964 - 66 she served as president of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and was awarded the Bishop's Medal of Honor when she completed her term of office.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Rose DAVEY & Josephine BROWN; brother, Thomas ASKINS; sons, Thomas Edward & William Dudley.

She is survived by daughter, Josephine McPHERSON, 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Burial at Holy Hope Cemetery, Oracle at Prince Rd. Tucson, AZ.
