Lovell E. "Chuck" Childs, 83, of Show Low, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2009, in an Apache Junction nursing center. He was born October 5, 1925, at Riverton, Nebraska, the son of Everette and Elva (Freed) Childs. He was reared and attended school at Ft. Morgan, Colorado. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps in1945, where he spent twenty years before retiring. He was recalled to active duty during the Vietnam War and served in Vietnam until being seriously wounded. He married Lillie Olva Freed in 1965 in Yuma. Following discharge from the Marine Corps, he lived in Barstow, CA and Phoenix where he was employed by the Pinkerton Security Agency.

He came to Show Low in 1974 and worked as a driver for Reidhead Lumber and Fort Apache Timber Company. He worked transporting vehicles for Horne Auto Center until January of this year. He was an avid racing enthusiast in the mini stock division at Thunder Raceway and also enjoyed football. He was always happy, loved his grandchildren and "lived until he died". He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Hayhurst of Lakeside; five sons, Chuck Lovell Childs, Jr. (Sheryl) of Aurora, CO, John Hayhurst (Marilyn) of Oregon, Michael Barker of El Centro, CA, Bruce Barker of Missouri, and David Barker (Becky) of Show Low; a brother, Donald Childs, of Texas; eighteen grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Arthur and eight brothers and sisters.

Viewing will be Monday from 9:00 A.M. until service time. Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M., Monday, February 9th, in the Black's Mortuary Chapel with Chaplain Keven Weaver officiating. Burial, with military honors performed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Show Low Chapter # 9907, will be at the Show Low Cemetery.
