David Franklin 'Grumpy Dave' Wells

David Franklin Wells, known as "Grumpy Dave," 72, of Show Low passed away May 31, 2008. Dave was born July 6, 1935 in Denmar, W.Va.

He moved to Arizona in 1951 and started a horse transportation business, "Giddi Up Go," in 1965. He also trained race horses during that time. In 1975 Dave founded the Wells Ranch Stables and horse contracting and operated that business until 1979 when he moved to Show Low and opened the first feed store in the area in 1980.

Dave was foreman for the Stevens Ranch for three years, until 1986 when he ventured in a new business called "Grumpy Dave's Bargain Barn" where the current Auction Service was started. In 1992 Dave added horses to the mix and started the Arizona Draft Horse Auction.

Dave was a talented musician, horseman and family man.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda Wells; his children, David Wells of Vista, Calif., Carl Wells of Show Low, Peggy Chambers and June Carter, both of Eagar, and Vicky Wells of Show Low; stepchildren Ken Long and Cindy Huggins of Parachute, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Celebration of Life services were held at Black's Mortuary on June 3 with a horse and wagon processional transporting him to Show Low Cemetery directly afterwards.
