Gretchen Elizabeth (Zoellner) Nielsen

Gretchen Elizabeth (Zoellner) Nielsen, beloved daughter of the Rev Jack and Eleanor ZOELLNER, and mother of six-year-old Dane Tristan NIELSEN, and sister of Mrs. Susan (Timothy) PHILLIPS, died Oct. 17, 2003 in Scottsdale after a horrific and courageous 3 year battle with cancer. Gretchen was born in Santa Cruz, California, on February 22, 1957.

She was Director of Special Events and Catering for several luxury hotels and resorts in Los Angeles. Gretchen hosted many movie and television premiers in Beverly Hills. In Scottsdale she served as Director of Marketing and Special Events for Danny's Enterprises. She was instrumental in planning and design of the Barcelona Restaurant.

Her home and heart were in Los Angeles for 29 years where she gave food and gifts to the homeless on the streets and cared for stray animals. In May, 1997, Dane was born and they moved to Scottsdale. Dane was the great love of her life.

They are members of La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church. Gretchen's sister, Susan, has been her constant caregiver for the past three years.

Other family members are: Major Timothy PHILLIPS, USAF Ret., and now Vice Counsel of the Embassy of the USA in Bucharest, Romania, and their sons, Mark and Eric.

A Memorial Celebration of her New Life was held at La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church, 6300 E. Bell Rd., Scottsdale, AZ on Saturday, Oct 25, at 2 PM.
