| Connie Sanchez (May 30, 1921 - June 16, 2009) Connie Sanchez, life-long resident and Flagstaff native died on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 after a brief illness. She was born on May 31, 1921 to Rosa H. and Maximino Sanchez who were one of the first Hispanic pioneer families of our city. Connie was known and loved by many people in Flagstaff and will be greatly missed. She will always be remembered for her sense of style, kind heart, and beautiful personality. She had a love for people, enjoyed conversation and was known as the best jitterbug dancer. Connie was a mother-figure to her seven nieces and nephews. At the untimely death of her older sister Elpidia, she took on the responsibility with her two sisters Esperanza Trillo and Ramona Rodriguez to caring for Elpidia's seven young children. Connie was a loving and giving Aunt who devoted her life to raising them. Connie graduated from St. Anthony's Catholic School. She worked for several years with her good friends at the American Laundry and then for many years as a pharmacy clerk and as an associate in retail and customer service. After she retired, she enjoyed babysitting the 3rd and 4th generations of her family. Connie was a devout Catholic and has a long history of involvement in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. She along with her mother and family members were one of the first families who built of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Connie was a member of and helped establish the Guadalupanas, sang in the choir, and raised funds for the church by organizing the "La Jamaica" festival for several years. She was also a dedicated member of the Rosary Committee. Connie's volunteerism extended to the community as a member of the service organization The Monterey Club. Some of Connie's favorite activities were dancing, Bingo, playing cards, family gatherings, watching the Diamond Backs and her favorite TV shows. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and socializing with friends. Connie is survived by her older sister Esperanza "Hope" Trillo and the nephews and nieces she raised: Isabel (Remigio) Archuleta, Mary Huerena, Rosa Arias, Matilda McCullah Simmons, and David (Jessie) Contreras. She is also survived by five generations of nieces and nephews and many close friends. Connie was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Lucas Sanchez, two sisters Elpidia Contreras and Ramona Rodriguez, and two nephews Elias Contreras and Fernando Contreras. A Holy Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2009 at Our Lady of Guadalupe with funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 22, 2009 with burial following at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
