The Lord took Cecil Edward Pappan home Friday, Sept. 20, 2002. Born on May 5, 1922, he was the youngest of 16 children of Carrie and Warren Pappan and at age 80 was the last living member of his immediate family. He was born and raised on the Kaw Indian Reservation at Kaw City, Oklahoma and received his formal education at Chilocco Indian School. At the age of 12 he joined the CC Camp work force and later served his country as a Marine during World War II. A man of many skills, he worked in the oil fields and after a severe back injury studied and mastered the plumbing trade. He moved to Phoenix from Denver, Colorado in the early 60’s and moved to Kearny in 1967. He worked for Kennecott Copper Corporation for 16 years and also maintained his own plumbing business. An active member of Kearny Elks Lodge #2478, and an avid golfer, he annually celebrated his birthday by watching the Kentucky Derby horse races. His wife, Bernice, two daughters, three sons, 12 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a multitude of friends survive him. His oldest daughter, Janet Skellenger, lives in California, and Cindy Gifford lives in Alabama with her husband David. Three sons, David, Ricky, Rodney and wife Kathy, Olson all reside in Kearny. Janet’s son Michael Gustaveson lives in Tustin, California with his wife, Tiya, and daughter, Courtney. Cindy’s sons, Dewayne and Donnie Patterson, and two great-grandson, Justin and Cody live in Rainsville, Alabama. Nine other grandchildren, Darren, JR, Kyle, Shane, Ryan, Jason, Kent, Anna and David Olson remain in the Kearny area. Services were held Friday, Sept. 27, at the United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd in Kearny followed by a potluck luncheon at the Kearny Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, or to Banner Home Care, 2250 E. Hwy 60 in Miami, Arizona. Arrangements were made by Griffith Mortuary.
