Virgie Lee (Harris) Rex, 94, wife, mother and teacher, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Providence Saint Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA. She was born April 11, 1908 on a cattle ranch outside the town of Duncan in the Territory of Arizona and truly was an Arizona pioneer. She moved to Superior with her family in 1925 and graduated as Salutatorian of the first graduating class of Superior High School in 1926. She then attended Tempe Normal State College (now Arizona State University) and graduated in 1928 with a teaching certificate. She taught elementary school in Superior starting in 1928. Later on she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from ASU. Several generations of Superiorites were taught by Mrs. Rex until 1973, a period of 45 years. Mrs. Rex was one of the oldest and most respected residents of Superior. She was the Grand Marshal and Matron of Honor for the 50th reunion of Superior High School held in 1995 for graduates of the years 1926 through 1950. She attended school with or taught most of those attending the reunion that attracted scores of highly successful graduates from all over the country. She married Halder "Hal" John Rex in 1936. He became the Mill Superintendent for Magma Copper Company shortly after the wedding, a position he held for 33 years until his death in 1971. At his death, the two had been married for 35 years. Mrs. Rex said, "The children of Superior were so fortunate to be in the Superior school system . . . Even now, if anything happens to us, whether we are in Superior or not, we know that our friends are behind us. When we suffer from our losses, we have comfort knowing our friends will always help us to continue. Through our families, happiness, sorrow and losses, Superior survives. All of our friends being together allow us to relive our memories of Superior. So many years have passed but to me you will always be young." Left behind in loving memory are a son, John Charles Rex, and his wife, Judy, of Olympia, WA; a daughter, Karen Ann Burke, and her husband, William, of Young; granddaughters, Jade Charisse Rex of Olympia, Virgie Ann Sanders of Young and Lori Jan Jones of Apache Junction; and great grandchildren, Coty Jones and Amanda and Blaine Sanders. She was preceded in death by her husband, Halder "Hal" John Rex; her parents, Charles Henry and Eda Ann (Chapman) Harris; sisters, Gladys (Harris) Goodspeed and Beatrice (Harris) Merino; and a brother, Gus Henry Harris. Mrs. Rex had a wonderful sense of humor that all enjoyed. She will be dearly missed. Visitation was Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at the Presbyterian Church, 100 N. Magma Avenue, Superior. The funeral service followed at 1 p.m. Interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Superior. Miles Mortuary of Miami assisted the family with funeral arrangements. Published October 30, 2002. |
