Norman F. Mathews

Mr. Norman F. Mathews, born Feb. 13, 1924, in Prescott, Ariz., went to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, Aug. 28, 2006.

Following graduation from Prescott High School, Mr. Mathews enlisted in the United States Army, where he served with honor and distinction with the 41st Infantry Division. Mr. Mathews saw combat in the Southwest Pacific and was the recipient of a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

His love of the outdoors led Mr. Mathews to earn Bachelor and Masters degrees from New Mexico State University in Forestry, Range and Wildlife Management. Mr. Mathews' career was devoted to holding responsible positions with the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.

Once retired, Mr. Mathews was actively involved with many conservation and hunting organizations. He wrote numerof outdoor magazines and authored the book "Hunting Trophy Game."

Mr. Mathews was preceded in death by his mother, Esther Marie, and his father, Benjamin, who moved from Minnesota to Prescott in 1919.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Ida; son Greg; daughter Jann Mauck and her husband Bill; grandson Hunter Ortega-Mathews; sisters Mary Elizabeth and Vivian; brothers Jack and Craig; and many close family friends.

The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Norman to the Veterans Medical Center, General Post Account #9007, 500 Highway 8Q North, Prescott, Ariz., 86313.

A graveside service will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Prescott.

Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
