The White Mountain Independent Show Low, Arizona 02/06/2004 Edwin Reed Powell, 81, died Feb. 1, 2004 at Winslow Memorial Hospital. Eddie was born in Tucson and was raised in Phoenix. He graduated from Phoenix Union High School with the class of 1939. He went to Flagstaff to attend college on a music scholarship. He then went into the U.S. Army and served for three years in WWII. He was in the China-Burna-India Theater, serving mostly in India. After returning home he attended the University of Arizona on a G.I. Bill and earned his law degree and graduated in 1951. That same year he married Lois Nutting of Holbrook. In 1953, they moved to Holbrook where Eddie had practiced law ever since. He also served as Navajo County Attorney for a time. He loved a good game of golf, worked crossword puzzles and filled in at bridge when the Bridge Club needed him. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and served as choir director for 30 years. He served on the Petrified Forest Museum Association for many years, was also a member of Chalcedony Lodge No. 6 F&AM in Holbrook, was a member of Elks Lodge and had been a member of the Holbrook Lions Club and the American Legion. He has also enjoyed being a member of the Holbrook Little Theater for many years. Eddie had also been a precinct committeeman for the Democratic Party for a time. He was always aware of and concerned about the community, the state and nation. He is survived by his wife, Lois N. Powell of Holbrook; four sons, Edwin Dean Powell of Holbrook, Michael Reed Powell of Mesa, Donald N. Powell of Tacoma, Washington and Jeffrey David "J.D." (Tracey) Powell of Falls Church, Virginia; three granddaughters and one great-grandson. Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 5 at the Holbrook United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the Holbrook Cemetery. Owens Mortuary of Holbrook handled arrangements. See Also: Find A Grave |
