The White Mountain Independent Show Low, Arizona 12/21/2004 Leo Glen " Jack" Hunt, 86, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004 in Snowflake. Mr. Hunt was born April 24, 1918 in Fruitland, New Mexico and was the last true pioneer of the family that consisted of one daughter and six sons of John LaRay and Martha Hatch Hunt. He was raised in Southern Utah near the Navajo Reservation. He learned fluent Navajo, and worked as a truck driver as a young man for the CCC. He married Frances Louise Allred in 1939, while working as a driver hauling Vanadium ore to Uravan, Colorado. The uranium would actually be extracted from that ore and used in making the first atomic bombs that would eventually end World War II. Jack, as his brothers called him, moved his young family to Greasewood in 1943 to work for his family at the Greasewood Trading Post. He was soon drafted into the Army, but returned after the war to spend more than 20 years as the Greasewood store manager. Tired of driving the 55-mile commute from Holbrook, he franchised the first Circle K in Holbrook. Upon retiring, he continued to pursue his love of golf by working and golfing at Hidden Cove Golf Course in Holbrook until recently. Mr. Hunt served as Mayor of Holbrook from 1978 to 1982, and continued to provide informal friendly chamber of commerce work at the golf course for the rest of his life. A true sportsman, he had a passion for hunting and fishing, traveling throughout the Southwest with his sons and friends to pursue his enjoyment of the great outdoors. Dutch oven cooking with the Boy Scouts or any other fortunate trail mates would mean a savory meal of biscuits and gravy, and an early wakeup call in the morning to greet the dawn. He raised his large family in Holbrook, where he was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He talked around the world on his Ham radio equipment, and found happiness in his small orchard and vegetable garden. He was a tender-hearted man who led an adventurous and joyful life that was fully lived, and we'll now let him play through to the next hole. Survivors include his devoted wife, Francis of Holbrook; one daughter, Joyce A. Hunt; five sons, Jack Glen Hunt of Phoenix, Jim C. Hunt of Dallas, Texas, Jerry H. Hunt of Holbrook, Jay R. Hunt of Shumway and John T. Hunt of Taylor; also 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 20 at the Holbrook Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will be in the Holbrook Cemetery See Also: Find A Grave |
