Vangeline Herberg, a longtime resident of Prescott, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2006. She was born on Nov. 11, 1925, in Blaine, Wash., and at an early age moved to Fairfield, Calif., where she fell in love and married her husband of the next 58 years, John, a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church on Nov. 30, 1947.

A proud and dedicated wife of a career Air Force officer, she accompanied her husband to his numerous assignments, in the States and abroad, until his 30-year retirement from active military duty in 1972. She realized her lifelong dream of travel by train and plane to parts unknown, and found a kindred spirit in her husband for wanderlust adventure.

She was honorary President of the Officers Wives Club and Adviser to the NCO Wives at Goose Bay AFB, Labrador, Canada, and Homestead APB, Fla. She also served as an officer of Beta Sigma Phi, Ladies Sorority Chapter, in Holyoke, Mass.

Vangie was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marie Costa Alameda, and her five brothers, Ernie, John, Manuel, Anthony, and Joseph.

Vangie was the beloved wife of John, devoted mother of Darby, James and Jeanne, and the loving grandmother of Clayton, Lisa and Cassie.

Her husband, children, grandchildren and sibling Mary Philips and her husband Henry, many nieces and nephews, son-in-law Rick and daughter-in-law Lorie, and many dear friends survive her.

She was beloved by all who knew her for her gaiety of spirit, spontaneous laughter, and selfless devotion to her family, always with a loving heart. She gave from her heart, was unflagging in her generosity, and was always there when we needed her. She will be greatly missed

A Celebration of Vangie's life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 18, at the Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home, corner of Cortez and Carleton in Prescott, with visitation one hour prior; a luncheon will follow the services in the Carriage House on the funeral home grounds.

Memorial services and Final Commendation will be at 10:40 a.m. Friday, May 19, at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev.
