The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Wednesday, August 05, 2009 John R. Hay, 76, passed away recently in Prescott on May 13, 2009. He was born in Cananea, Sonora Mexico, on August 17, 1933, to Harold L. and Thelma Jones Hay. His parents, his son, John Thomas Hay and his daughter Patricia Ann Hay predeceased him. After graduating at the University of Arizona, John went on active duty with the Air Force at Roswell AFB Roswell, NM. Completing his military obligation, John went to work for the National Park Service, first at Organ Pipe NM, and was then transferred to Lake Powell in 1959. He became intrigued with the idea of being a riverboat pilot for Canyon Tours, so he resigned from NPS and signed on with Canyon Tours. He made over 500 trips with 10,000 passengers to Rainbow Bridge. With a growing family, John left Canyon Tours and taught school in Page for several years and then moved to Colorado in 1973. While John was in Page he was a member of Glen Canyon Lodge No. 59, F. & A.M. and he and his wife, Dorothy, were Worthy Patron and Worthy Matron of Glen Canyon Chapter No. 55, Order of the Eastern Star. John and Dorothy were subsequently divorced in 1975. Dorothy died July 27, 2008 in St. George, Utah. In 1980 John was employed as a desk officer for the Mesa Police Dept. and retired from there in 1996 and moved to Prescott Valley. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and on the Board of Directors. John is survived by his brothers, Clark (Pam), Stanley (Evelyn) and Glenn, numerous nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. John's ashes will join those of his children in the area of Lake Powell that he so loved during the Thanksgiving Holiday. Information provided by survivors. |
