| The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Saturday, August 01, 2009 Betty passed away peacefully on the morning of July 30, 2009. She was born in Camden, N.J., on Jan. 5, 1923. She and her family spent their early years in Rhinebeck, N.Y. Betty moved to Arizona when she was 24 years old. A caring, loving, gentle and kindhearted wife, mother, grandmother and friend will be missed by all who knew her. She was an exceptional homemaker, seamstress, secretary, singer and champion Scrabble player. Her first secretarial job was with the Texaco Oil Co. in New York City. After moving to Arizona she became an administrative assistant for Devereaux Day School in Paradise Valley. Her infamous puns, plays on words, "grandma jokes" and poems were Betty's signature. The grandkids could always count on their grandma to be a "fan in the stands" at their sporting events, offering cold water and peaches from her old brown cooler. Her cabin in "the cool pines" of Prescott was her favorite place to summer and go fishing. Betty taught our family about courage as she braved physical ailments throughout her life. Her favorite color was purple, the color of strength. If guests are inclined, they are encouraged to wear her signature color to the service. The family that will always remember her are daughters Mary Elizabeth (George) Vasquez, Georgina Rae (Jeannie) Ost, and Linda Kay Ost; stepson Fred A. (Kathy) Ost Jr.; grandchildren Kathy (Matt) Norton, Fred (Julie) Ost, Tim (Julie) Vasquez, Amy Vasquez, Jennilyn (Anthony) Costantini, Amanda Upton and Alex (Dan) Gable; great-grandchildren Isabel, Camden and Cody Vasquez, Shai and Santana McDonald, and Odessa and John Norton. Visitation is from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, with a memorial service from 3 to 4 p.m. at Carr-Tenney Mortuary, 2621 S. Rural Road, Tempe, AZ 85282; (480) 967-2104. Interment will be Monday at St. Francis Cemetery and will be attended by the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, donations for peach and apple trees to be planted in the Mountain Club and at Camp Sky-Y in Prescott would be appreciated.
