Valborg Lucille Sheldahl died in California on Monday, July 27, 2009, at the age of 89.

Born in Canby, Minn., on Aug. 11, 1919, to William and Alma Ness, she was the middle child of five. She loved to fish with her dad and played high school basketball. Val married Wilbur Sheldahl in 1940. They spent the first years of their married life together in Iowa where they started their family. With three children, they followed a dream to head west and moved to Arizona in 1956. Except for a short time spent in Nevada and California, where their fourth child was born, Wilbur and Val lived and worked most of their lives in Phoenix and the Prescott area. Val devoted her life to her family and loved to prepare for the many extended family get-togethers. Her patience and work ethic were admirable.

Val was preceded in death by Wilbur, her husband of 54 years; and her two older sisters, Verna Wicks and Doris Ahlman. She is survived by daughter Bonnie Dahl and her husband Dennis of Eastsound, Wash.; son Bill Sheldahl and his wife Debbie of Oceanside, Calif.; daughter Beverly Jones and her husband Chris of Riverside, Calif.; son Brian Sheldahl and his wife Tania of Prescott, Ariz.; brother Clayton Ness of Tonto Basin, Ariz.; sister Audrey Van Overbeke of Sutherland, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery. The family will have a private service.
