The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ April 11, 2007, p. A10 Arthur C. Hoene, Jr. died March 20 in Glendale, Ariz. Art was born in Duluth, Minn., in 1912, third oldest of a family of 12. He graduated from Duluth Boy's Cathedral High School where he played with great success on the hockey and football teams. He attended Duluth Junior College for one year, and while there he played on a championship football team. He graduated from the University of Norte Dame and then earned a law degree from the University of Harvard Law School. In 1941 Art entered the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, becoming an officer and was immediately assigned to a Coast Guard Cutter on convoy duty in the North Atlantic, eventually rising to the position of Executive Officer. At war's end he joined the Judge Advocate General's Office as a Coast Guard Hearing Officer serving the Portland and San Francisco areas. He retired from the Coast Guard with the rank of Commander after 22 years of service. For the past several years he lived in Wickenburg where he played golf nearly every day. Part of every summer he would spend in Duluth and Schultz Lake. Preceding him in death was his sister June Petersen; brothers Howard, John, Philip, William, Thomas, and Richard. Art is survived by his sister Mary Grace Campbell of Minneapolis; brothers Rev. Robert Hoene, S.J. of Wauwatosa, Wis.; David Hoene of Boise, Idaho; Herbert Hoene of Duluth, Minn.; and 68 nephews and nieces. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held a later date in Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary in Duluth, Minn. Arrangements are under the direction of Wickenburg Funeral Home. |
