The White Mountain Independent Show Low, Arizona 09/14/2004 Melvin Edwin Hurst, 92, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004 in Payson. Mr. Hurst was born in Stufflefield, Illinois. He lived his younger years in Maroa and Decatur, Illinois. After leaving high school he worked as a farm hand in Maroa and eventually became a machine operator in the soy bean processing industry. He worked for Specer-Kellogg in Decatur for over 25 years. Mr. Hurst came to Arizona in 1997 and lived in Goodyear until he came to Overgaard in 2001. He attended the First Baptist Church in Overgaard. Mr. Hurst is survived by two daughters, Colleen (Ron) O'Lena of Overgaard, and Phyllis (Walt) Garrett of Albertville, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Irene Hurst Dec. 28, 2003, and a daughter Marlene McGrew in November 1972. A viewing was held Monday, Sept. 13 at Owens Mortuary in Snowflake, with grave side services held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14 at the Reed Hatch Memorial Cemetery in Taylor.
