Lionel George Simmons

Lionel George Simmons, of Mesa, age 84, born December 14, 1918 in Charleston, Utah. Son of Stephen A. and Theresa P. Simmons, died peacefully in his sleep February 2, 2003 in his home.

Lionel served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Southern States Mission. After his return, he served 4 years in the Army Air Corp., mainly in India.

He married Norma Slade on August 28th, 1946 in the Salt Lake Temple. After graduating from Brigham Young University, they moved to Arizona where he worked for the IRS until retirement in 1976.

Lionel is survived by his wife, Norma, their 3 children, Gary (NaDene) Simmons of Gilbert, Carolyn (Bill) Whetten, of Mesa, and Dwayne (Bonnie) Simmons, of Vernal, Utah, one brother Kenneth P. (LaVonne) Simmons of Midway, Utah, 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, LeGrande, sisters, Nedra Brimley and Ruby Ryan, and 2 grandchildren, Stephen and Blake Simmons.

Funeral services were held Thursday, February 6, 2003, in the 46th ward chapel at 1911 N. 24th St. in Mesa. Visitation was held Wednesday at Bunkers Mortuary, 33 Centennial Way, Mesa, and again Thursday morning at the chapel. Published in the Arizona Republic on 2/5/2003.
