Prescott (AZ) newspaper January Elizabeth Babcock Riggs, Century Old Resident, Dies A woman who narrowly missed a tragic death on her wedding day, Mrs Elizabeth Babcock Riggs, and then lived to be 100 years of age, died here today. Mrs Riggs and her husband, Lewis, were missed when Geronimo and his band massacred citizens of Willcox shortly after the couple were married and en route home to the Hooker ranch, where those at the headquarters were killed by the band of Indians. Coming to Arizona in 1882, as Miss Babcock, she became the cook for the Hooker ranch in Graham and Cochise counties where she met the man she married. The couple bought a ranch in Taylor canyon where they raised their family of three daughters: Florence, the oldest daughter, is Mrs Frank Shields of Yarnell; Sarah, Mrs Arthur Botzon; and Mrs Charles C. Coles both of Phoenix. The Riggs came to Prescott some 32 years ago and Riggs died here in 1932. Mrs Riggs celebrated her 100th birthday with four generations of her family with her on March 24, 1957 at her home at 231 N Alarcon St. Mrs Ila Sanders has lived there with her as a companion for several years.
