The Camp Verde Bugle, Camp Verde, Arizona Thursday, August 13, 2009 Calvin Quinton Manely, of Cottonwood, passed away July 29 at the age of 85. He was born July 4, 1924, in Lebanon, Kansas, to John Elic Manely and Ruth (Senor) Manely. If you were fortunate enough to know him, you know that if anyone deserves fireworks on their birthday, it's Quint. The youngest of seven children, he grew up on the family farm there. As a boy, he lied about his age in order to join a special Calvary program at age 15. While in high school, he was drafted by Major League Baseball, but upon graduation chose instead to enlist in the Marine Corps with whom he served in the South Pacific in World War II. At the end of the war, he accepted a football and track scholarship to Kansas Wesleyan University where he earned a bachelor degree in kinesiology with a psychology minor. He married the love of his life, Barbara Jean (Spalding) Manely and they moved to California where he enjoyed a successful career in wholesale marketing with Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) until his retirement in 1983, after which he avidly enjoyed golf, hunting and fishing. He is survived by Barbara, his wife of 55 years; his sons, Randal McManus and Michael Stuart Manely; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews. At his request there will be no service; his ashes to be interred at Phoenix Cave Creek National Veterans Administration Cemetery and Columbarium at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to: Hospice Family Care, 100 Shelton St., Prescott, AZ 86301 Info provided by family members. Information provided by survivors. |
