The Camp Verde Bugle, Camp Verde, Arizona Thursday, August 13, 2009 D. K. (Devere Knox) Roberts, Jr. passed away July 17, 2009 in Cottonwood, Arizona. D.K. was born September 27, 1922 in Sherman, Texas, to Devere and Hallie Belle Roberts. He was raised in Farwell, Texas and attended SMU on a football scholarship before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he served honorably as a medical corpsman in the South Pacific including battles at the Solomons, Guadalcanal and Tarawa. He served his country again during the Korean War. In 1948, D.K. and his wife Helen, moved to Sedona where he and his father opened Sedona's first lumber yard. He also established Sedona's first trash collection service, laundry route and dry cleaners. During his career he worked for the U.S. Forest Service and the Arizona State Highway Department and later ran his own heating and air conditioning business. D.K. was an outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, and traveling in his motor home. He is survived by a nephew, Tom Green, and two nieces, Wanda Holder and Susan Cluff as well as many great nieces and nephews. D. K. will be missed by his many friends and family members, but leaves behind lots of love, good memories, friendships and people who are better for having known him. Family grave-site services were held at the Sedona cemetery. D.K.'s favorite charity was Father Flanagan's Boys Town, PO Box 7000, Boys Town, NE 68010. Information provided by survivors. |
