Linda E. Martens was born July 25, 1948 in Chicago, Ill., to Earl and Doris (Erickson) Keller, the youngest of three children. Linda died July 23, 2007 after a brief illness.

After her cremation, a memorial service was held at the Calvary Baptist Church in Wickenburg on Friday, July 27.

She is survived by her husband of 31 years Bruce Martens, brother Ward E. Keller of Wickenburg, sister Colette Barrett of Bahia del Sol in El Salvador, Central America, a daughter April Edwards and favorite son-in-law Michael of Wickenburg, and son Christian Martens and his wife Nicky of Tracy, Calif. Linda was blessed with five grandchildren, granddaughters Taylor and Cassidy Edwards of Wickenburg and grandsons Brandon, Cameron and Toby Martens of Tracy, Calif. Of Linda’s many nieces and nephews, nieces Jena Savage (Richard) and Heather Lloyd (Alex) reside in Wickenburg with nieces Cheryl Strella (Mike) and Debra Martens living in Sacramento, Calif. Nephews David Keller and Keith Martens (Julie) live in Oregon and California respectively. Linda’s mother-in-law Elma Martens resides in Rancho Cordova, Calif., near Sacramento.

Linda was a loving person of great character with a tremendous passion for the protection of animals and a genuine compassion for people in need. As an accomplished horsewoman, Linda could often be found on the trails around Wickenburg with her many friends. She participated in many Las Damas monthly rides as well as an occasional weeklong ride when schedules permitted.

Linda enjoyed spending the winters with her husband Bruce, their four horses, two dogs, and two cats in Wickenburg; but her first love was their working cattle ranch in the Black Hills, near Newcastle, Wyo., on the South Dakota border. She so loved the history of the Black Hills and the stories about early settlers and would often discover bits and pieces of days gone by while hiking with her dogs.

During their winters in Wickenburg, she and Bruce regularly attended the Calvary Baptist Church along with enjoying the many family functions put on by the First Southern Baptist Church where their daughter and family attended. As a devout Christian, Linda studied the Bible daily and was an avid reader of Christian novels. For the past 12 years while in Newcastle, Wyo., Linda and Bruce attended the First United Methodist Church and enjoyed its cozy early Sunday morning services in the gazebo.

While in Wyoming, Linda was involved in her garden club “The Dirt Daubers,” enjoying a lifelong love of gardening. Linda also enjoyed photography as a serious hobby, demonstrated by the multitude of county fair ribbons adorning her home picture gallery.

Linda was tireless in her efforts to help frightened and defenseless animals, and it would be greatly appreciated any donations made in Linda’s honor be sent to the Weston County Humane Society, P.O. Box 744, Newcastle, WY 82701 or The Humane Society of Wickenburg, P.O. Box 147, Wickenburg, AZ 85358.
