Virginia Rose Brost Ness was born May 19, 1917 to Fred C. and May Bell Herbster, in Kansas City, Mo. She graduated from the Kansas City Dental College and worked as a dental hygienist in Kansas City. She and her husband Carl had three sons -- Fred, Bill, Richard -- and a daughter Carolyn.

Virginia and Carl brought their young family to Wickenburg, Ariz., in 1949 to start a new life as proprietors of the Texas Cafe. Virginia quickly became involved in community life as a member of the Soroptimist Club, the Country Club and serving as president of the PTA. She also worked as cook and hostess at the Texas Cafe.

In 1956 they sold the Texas Cafe and moved the family to Huntington Beach, Calif., where Carl bought and operated a sporting goods store and Virginia worked for Dr. Lee, a dental surgeon and doctor for the US Olympic Team.

Virginia and Carl returned to Wickenburg in 1961, where they opened and operated the Gold Nugget Restaurant in the old Santa Fe Cafe building. They poured their lives into the restaurant, their family and the community. They sold the restaurant in 1970, after which Virginia started a popular local catering business. She retired in 1977 and moved with Carl to Youngtown and then Sun City, Ariz., where Carl passed away in 1989.

On July 3, 2004, Virginia married Loren Ness in Peoria, Ariz., where she lived until her death Aug. 20, 2007. Virginia is survived by her husband Loren; her children Fred, Bill, Richard and Carolyn and their spouses; eight grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church of Sun City.

Virginia was a member of the “greatest generation,” who lived through the great depression and World War II. Her life was marked by hard work and acts of kindness. She loved people and animals, and never hesitated to provide food and shelter to any in need. She was a grand gal who will be missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service was held Saturday, (Aug. 25) at the American Lutheran Church of Sun City, 17200 N Dell Webb Blvd., Sun City.
