Wilburn (Dick) Dickson

Wilburn “Dick” Dickson, age 84, passed away August 29 in Sun City West following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 3 at 9:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Sam Weinschenk officiating.

Mr. Dickson was born Feb. 18, 1923 in Henderson, Tenn., to Cordie and Pearlie (Buck) Dickson. He attended schools there and following high school worked in the Conservation Corps until serving in the U.S Army during World War II.

Following his military service he attended Arkansas State University, graduating with a degree in Business Administration. He taught school for more than four years in Okawville, Ill., during that time he was also serving in the Air National Guard at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. He later began working full-time with the Air National Guard and in 1963 returned to active duty in the Air Force moving to Denver, Colo.

Mr. Dickson served as a liaison between the National Guard and the Air Force in establishing Computer Communications between the National Guard Bases and the Air Force. He served in the Pentagon from 1968 until his retirement in 1979.

He married Verna “Juanita” Campbell in 1987 and they made their home in Heber Springs, Ark. They also traveled extensively.

They began wintering in Arizona in the late 1980s and moved to Wickenburg in 1996. Dick was a member of the First Presbyterian Church here in Wickenburg. He enjoyed playing the guitar and was also an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by a brother Herman Dickson and sister Mae Flowers and a grandson Amen Gross.

He is survived by his wife Juanita of Wickenburg, son Michael Dickson of Wickenburg, and daughter and son-in-law Jamie and Fred Gross of Abingdon, Va., stepsons Dennis Campbell (Peggy) of Little Rock, Ark., and Michael Campbell of Trumann, Ark., sisters Beatrice Blankenship and Millie Overturf of Lexington, Ky., Sue Wallace of Trumann, Ark., brothers-in-law Thomas Curton (Peggy) of Highland, Ark., Jim Curton (Judy) of Torrance, Calif., sister-in-law Louise Hudspeth (Forrest) of Ocala, Fla., 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
