Stephen James Kaufmann, 55, of Wickenburg, Ariz., beloved father, son, brother, uncle and friend, died on Aug 7 [2007]. Steve passed peacefully at Thunderbird Hospital in Phoenix and was surrounded by his family.

Steve was born Sept. 5, 1951, in El Paso, Texas, to Marjorie Harbour-Kaufmann and Col. Leonard Kaufmann Jr. (USAF-RET). Steve was raised an Air Force “brat” and lived in Japan, Virginia, South Carolina, France and Germany before moving to Arizona. He graduated from Hampton High in 1969 and later attended Glendale Community College and Arizona State University.

Steve was most proud of his work with gas pipelines in Arizona. He was an avid reader and loved sports (Cleveland Browns, Diamond Backs, Suns) poker, camping and fishing. Steve was also a member of the Hassayampa Yacht Club where it is said he was almost disqualified for actually owning a boat. He also belonged to the American Legion and did work for Habitat for Humanity.

Steve in his younger years hiked and rafted the Grand Canyon, rode bulls and one summer with his son Stephen, traveled more than 4000 miles around the western United States.

Steve was person you could talk to about any subject; he had quick wit, great sense of humor and a very big heart.

Steve was preceded in death by his father Col. Leonard Kaufmann Jr. (USAF-RET) and his very faithful dog Bear and both sets of grandparents.

He is survived by his son Stephen James Kaufmann II; mother Marjorie Kaufmann of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; brothers Leonard (Rocky) Kaufmann of Somis, Calif., and Anthony Kaufmann of Phoenix, Ariz.; also nieces Nicloe Kaufmann, Sarah Kaufmann, grand-niece Kayla; sister-in-laws Teresa and RC; and nephew Joshua

The family would like to express special thanks to Loretta, ICU nurse at Thunderbird Hospital for her kindness and compassion. Terry, Cathy, Spanky and Wayne of Wickenburg - thank you.

A memorial gathering will take place Saturday (Sept. 8) at the Rancher Bar from 1 to 3 p.m. to celebrate Steve’s life.

Steve, you will be missed. “Bye”.
