Frances Barbara Cuddeback chatted cheerfully with her caregiver shortly after midnight on the morning of Jan. 5, then fell asleep with a smile and never woke up. She passed away peacefully nine hours later.

She was born Oct. 10, 1924, to George and Clara (Johnson) Brown in Somerville, Mass. After graduating from Boston University she entered her career as a journalist, writing for newspapers, The Associated Press, and later for radio stations in upstate New York. Her poetry was widely published and she won many contests based on slogans and essays she had written.

In 1966 she and her husband, Lew Cuddeback purchased a resort motel in Lake George, N.Y., which they operated for ten years. They also published a tourist periodical, sold real estate and became leaders in the state's Tourism and Travel Association. They continued their civic and social activities after moving to Wickenburg in 1984, serving as principal founders of the Arizona Travel Industry Association (ATIA). Fran also volunteered her organizational ability as part of Wickenburg's Community Action Program (CAP).

Fran is survived by daughter Gale Grafe of Bedford, N.H.; son Ernest Grafe of Oakland, Calif.; stepson Gary Cuddeback of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister Mary Dalzell of Kittery, Maine; grandson Nate Rowlson of Concord, N.H.; niece Joyce Mikesh; nephews Chandler Dalzell, Jr., and Douglas Sprague. She was preceded in death by her husband Lew and one sister Caroline Sprague.

Fran's children would like to express their grateful appreciation to the supremely caring and attentive owners and staff of My Father's Retirement Ranch, where she was fortunate enough to find a home in her final years.

Arrangements directed by Wickenburg Funeral Home.
