| John Acton, 92, of Oracle, passed away April 6, 2002. He was born in Mammoth on July 17, 1909, to Frank and Clara Acton. Growing up in a time where it took two days by wagon to get from Oracle to Tucson, Acton was able to see the growth and changes time brought to the community in which he was born. His parents divorced when he was 12-years of age and he left home working for his room and board. He also tried to continue with his schooling and he graduated in 1928 from Hayden High School. He attended Oklahoma City University and Oklahoma University in Norman, OK and then spent two years in the Navy and was a fireman on the railroad for steam engines. Acton later worked for the Hayden Mill and the Edison Utility Company, an ice plant and utility company and he provided ice for farmers who grew vegetables as well as to Hayden and Winkelman with large amounts going to Ray Consolidated Copper Company and the A.S. & R. Smelting and Refining Company. He went to work for Southern Pacific at the Hayden Junction and over the years he continued to work at a variety of places that fell into his line of work such as Standard Oil Company, in Phoenix and for Douglas Aircraft in California as well as Los Angeles Building and Dry Dock. He retired in 1974 after a long career with the federal government as a mechanical/industrial engineer. Acton was first married to Margaret Taylor in 1929 and although the marriage ended in divorce, the couple had a daughter, Margurett. Ten years later, while living in Illinois, he met his second wife, Carol. After dating for seven and a half years, they were married on July 17, 1949 and since they were both born on this date, they decided it seemed appropriate to wed on it as well. He is survived by his daughter, Margurett Taylor; sister, Edna Hale, of Mesa; brothers, Howard Acton, of Hayden and Walter Swingle, of Kearny and Phil Swingle, of Port Hueneme, CA; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. His wife, Carol, preceded him in death, in 1999. Friends may call Adair Funeral Homes, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Avenue at Magee from 9:30 to 10 a.m., Thursday, April 11. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. |
