Jay Freeman Turley

Jay Freeman Turley, 86, passed away September 22, 2007 in Mesa, Arizona.

Jay was born in Airpine, Arizona, June 15, 1921. He was the fourth child born to Lowell Barr and Grace Freeman Turley. He graduated from high school in Snowflake, Arizona and two years later from Gila Jr. College, Thatcher, Arizona.

He then was called to serve a two year mission in the Eastern States for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Following his mission he enlisted in the Air Corps in World War II and served for 3 years.

Following his service he attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, Utah, where he graduated in 1949. While there he married Leona Fairbourn, December 20, 1946, in the Logan LDS Temple. Upon graduating he became Director of the LDS Insitute of Religion at Gila Jr. College. After several years he went to Brigham Young University where he taught in the Religion Department and graduated with a Master's Degree in Counseling. Following graduation he returned to Thatcher and assumed the position of Institute Director which he held for a total of 15 years. He then went to Chico, California to open Institutes of Religion for the LDS Church at Chico State College and Butte Jr. College.

Two years later he transferred to Arizona State College to teach at the LDS Institute. After one year he took a leave of absence from teaching to help form a travel company and then helped develop a tutoring program for schools. He has been a High Councilman, Bishop, and has served 20 years as a Stake Patriarch. He has also served 20 years as a worker at the Mesa LDS Temple.

He is survived by his wife, Leona Turley; son Brent Jay Turley and daughter Gayle Harris; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He is preceeded in death by a daughter, Cindy Turley.

Visitation will be Monday, September 24, from 6-8 pm at Bunker Funeral Homes Garden Chapel 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa, AZ, 480-964-8686. Services will be held Tuesday, September 25, at 9 am at the LDS Udall Ward 525 E. 2nd Ave with visitation 1 hour prior.

Graveside services will follow at the Snowflake Cemetery.
