Barbara “Bobbie” Quigley Hungerford fought a courageous battle with lung cancer before going home to the Lord on Sept. 24, 2007. She will be lovingly remembered by her extended family and many friends as a fountain of optimism and encouragement. Her courage to face new challenges, even cancer, was admirable and inspirational to her family. Bobbie had a contagious smile and laugh, had a zest for life and lived out her faith as a devoted wife, mother, daughter and friend. Barbara Jane Quigley was born in Framingham, Mass., on Feb. 11, 1930, attended MacDuffee School for Girls in Springfield, Mass. and graduated from St. Elizabeth College in Convent Station, N.J. After college she worked as a lab technician at an RH lab at the University of Maryland Medical School operated by Johns Hopkins. She married Richard Hungerford on Aug. 1, 1953, and devoted her married life to supporting her husband’s military and professional career, raising her family and pursuing many interests. She volunteered at schools, hospitals, and for medical auxiliaries, rooted for her children at countless sporting events, enjoyed bridge, golf, competitive tennis, gardening and travel. Bobbie generously shared the gifts of hospitality and making people feel comfortable and welcome, always thinking of how she might help fill someone’s need. Most importantly, she taught her children and exhibited the virtues of faith, hope and love. Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Marguerite (Creedan) Quigley, and her infant son, Edward. Survivors include her husband and best friend, Rick Hungerford of Rio Verde; children Rich and Debbie Hungerford of Omaha, Neb., Diane and Mark Stroh of Olathe, Kan., Gina Hungerford and Dave Short of Glendale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Jennifer Hungerford Bishop, Katie Hungerford and Tiffany Hungerford of Omaha, Neb.; John Stroh, Greg Stroh and Tom Stroh of Olathe, Kan.; and great-grandson, Brian Hungerford of Omaha, Neb. Bobbie will be sorely missed and always part of their lives. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Dominic’s Mission at the Community Church in Rio Verde on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007. Memorials may be made in Bobbie’s name to the charity of the donor’s choice. Published in the Fountain Hills Times October 17, 2007. |
