Posted 2009-08-24 by Pat Wilson
Robert E. Monks, 72, of Fountain Hills and Colorado Springs passed away peacefully on Oct. 12, 2007 at Fountain View Village following a courageous battle against an aggressive brain disease.

Born Aug. 14, 1935 in Denver, Colo., Robert was a 1953 graduate of Limon High School. He married Velma Morrow, his wife of 51 years, in 1956.

He followed his childhood aspiration by becoming the founder of R.E. Monks Construction Company, a prominent heavy civil contractor in the southwest. He was involved in many community organizations and was instrumental in the McKenzie Monks Foundation, Lions Club, and Associated General Contractors of America, and was awarded the Colorado Construction Pioneer Award in 2003.

He is survived by his loving wife, Velma Monks; son Dan (Shonda) Monks of Colorado Springs and children Brandye (Nate Conley), Trevor, Brittany and Tyler; son Richard (Denise) Monks of Fountain Hills and daughters Michelle and Mandy; daughter Connie Jo (Steve) McAdams of Tucson, and children Makayla, Shane and Cassidy; siblings, Ed, Jerry, Patty and Jim Monks. Bob was preceded in death by granddaughter, McKenzie Monks, parents, Homer and Dorothy Monks, and brother, Jack Monks.

Services were held Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007 at Christ’s Church of Fountain Hills with a gathering afterward at FireRock Country Club. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Colorado Springs.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the McKenzie Monks Foundation, 16646 Laser Drive, Fountain Hills 85268.

Bob enjoyed his work and family time. Special time included going to the lake, golfing with his buddies, partying with the friends of the Marathon Motorcoach Club, and he enjoyed buying/selling collector cars.

Bob always believed his business existed to give others an opportunity to be successful. The family would like to thank everyone who has provided comfort and support throughout his illness and especially the Fountain View Village staff and the Visiting Angels. Bob was greatly loved and will be missed by many.
