John N. Smith of Fountain Hills passed away peacefully on Oct. 11, 2007 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis and other extended health problems. Mr. Smith was born in Mohall, N.D. on Aug. 15, 1932 to John and Adrie Smith and was a long-time resident of Mankato, Minn. before moving to Arizona. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of North Dakota Mr. Smith served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force and later went back to UND for his master’s degree in economics. He then worked in Minnesota as a sales representative for Josten’s Inc., the printing and publishing division, for almost 30 years. In Minnesota he married Sandra Springer in 1962 and they raised their family of four children in Mankato. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Boyd Smith. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Smith; son, Dr. Bret Smith and daughter-in-law Laurel of Lexington, Ky.; daughter Stephanie Sheppard and son-in-law Jeff Sheppard of Denver, Colo.; daughter Cara Miller and son-in-law Bob Miller of Rapid City, S.D.; daughter Nicole Greener and son-in-law Jon Greener of Eagle, Colo.; and nine much loved grandchildren who are his proudest legacy. Also surviving Mr. Smith are his brother, Gary Smith, his sisters Janine Webb and Sharlene Greek and brother-in-law Harold Greek, as well as many extended family members and many very good friends. John Smith was a member of the Fountains United Methodist Church and the Noon Kiwanis Club in Fountain Hills. A memorial service was held at the Methodist Church on Fountain Hills Boulevard on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007.
