Robert Peacock

Posted 2009-08-24 by Pat Wilson
Robert Peacock of Fountain Hills died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007 of heart failure.

Born in Orange County, N.J. on Oct. 14, 1919, Mr. Peacock was nearly 88 at the time of his death. In 87 years he was a son, a student, a countryman, a veteran, a professional, a husband, a grandfather and a great grandfather.

His life took him from New Jersey to Pennsylvania to New York to Arizona where he spent 18 years in post-retirement as a part-time employee and model husband to his wife, Elizabeth, of 57 years.

Born to Anna Chambers and James Maron Peacock, Bob was the youngest of five children. He attended Temple University in Philadelphia, earning his degree in business. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi and ran track with his brother, who was also a student there.

Following graduation he joined the Army. He was a sergeant in the European Theatre, fighting against the Germans in World War II. He came home in 1945 to honor a promise to a fallen best friend: to take care of that friend’s family. He took his responsibility seriously and fell in love with the family he was to care for.

He married Elizabeth Miranda Jenkins on Oct. 14, 1947 and became an instant father to Elizabeth Tomaya Jenkins. The three of them would later welcome Robert David and Lezlie Paula to their family.

Bob Peacock lived in New York City with his family and in 1960 moved to the suburb of Yonkers, where he earned his Master’s Degree at City College of New York while working full-time for Major Liquors, later Star Industries, as a wholesale liquor salesman. He raised his family in Yonkers and remained there until 1989 when he and Elizabeth relocated to Fountain Hills.

Following retirement he had worked as a limousine driver and then after arriving in Arizona he filled his sunny days by taking a position as a pool cleaner.

His always pleasant demeanor and vast knowledge of the liquor industry ultimately led him to a position at Walgreen’s in the liquor department. Many Fountain Hills residents counted on Bob for his expertise and opinion of their selections. Most just enjoyed interacting with him and sought him out frequently.

Robert Peacock was a man of character, diplomacy and heart. He never said a mean word about anyone and everyone liked him.

He leaves behind his three children; eldest daughter E. Tomaya Porter, and her husband Ronald N. Porter, son Robert (Bobby) Peacock, and his youngest daughter, Lezlie Peacock, who has been his primary care-giver for the past six years. He also leaves five grandchildren: Candice E. Porter, Heather V. Adamson and husband Edward Adamson, Kelli N. Murphy and husband Charles Murphy, Robert (Bobby) D. Peacock, and Stefani R. Peacock. There are also three surviving great-grandchildren: Jakob S., Miranda R., and Kendra V. Adamson.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
