Suzie (Campbell) Hamblin

Posted 2009-08-24 by Pat Wilson
Suzie Hamblin died on Monday, Sept. 3, 2007, having suffered a pulmonary embolism a week earlier.

The entire team at the Arizona Heart Hospital put forth a full-court effort and the family thanks them for their expertise and unflagging compassion.

Suzie was born in Sioux Rapids, Iowa to Ralph and Selma Campbell at her grandfather’s medical clinic on Oct. 5, 1937 and spent her early life in the state, graduating with a B.S. in nursing from the University of Iowa in 1959.

After graduation, she was off to Minneapolis with her new husband Jim, a typewriter, a collection of jazz records and a hi-fi set on which to play them. The records are mostly intact as are the memories.

As a wife, mother, friend and caregiver, she was equally accomplished. She loved her family first, last and always. She loved Mexico and the house in Las Conchas. She loved the chance to help others through the Stephen Ministry courses she taught during her 30-plus years at Orangewood Presbyterian Church.

She loved music and ran the artist-in-residency program for Jazz In AZ for many years. She was like a second daughter to her mother-in-law, Elizabeth Hamblin.

These three accomplishments were a labor of love and a special use of her talents for caregiving, organizing and teaching. They are part of her legacy, as is her longtime involvement with PEO and the Phoenix Art Museum.

Suzie is survived by her husband Jim (Fountain Hills); her daughter Kim (Phoenix); her son Chris, daughter-in-law Stacy and grandchildren Nathan and Laurel (Chandler); brother-in-law Steven Hamblin (Easton, Md.); as well as her brother Tom Campbell and sister-in-law Marilyn (Fountain Hills); niece Kathy Newton (Indiana); and nephews Michael (Queen Creek) and Craig Campbell (Mesa).

She also leaves behind many friends who will miss her greatly.

Services were held Sunday, Sept. 9. Instead of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be designated to the Francisco Hernandez Kidney Fund c/o The Larry D. Large Foundation 2470 W. Majestic Pkwy, Suite 120, Tucson AZ 85705.

Francisco has been the Hamblin caretaker and care-giver for 24 years and is now on dialysis and seeking a kidney transplant. This is a 501 (c3) charity which is raising much needed funds in support. For him, this can be the gift of life.
