Ilia Cowie-Freitas, Black Canyon City, Arizona. Former Clark County resident Ilia Cowie-Freitas died Feb. 28, 2001, in Black Canyon City, Ariz. She was 89. Her first husband, Marshall Cowie, and second husband, Isaiah Freitas, preceded her in death. Mrs. Cowie-Freitas was born Feb. 11, 1912, in Vancouver. She lived in Clark County until moving to Arizona in the 1960s. She graduated from Vancouver High School and earned a nursing degree from Emanuel Hospital in Portland. Mrs. Cowie-Freitas also graduated from Arizona Grand Canyon College with a bachelor's degree in education in 1971. She worked at the old Barnes Veterans Hospital and Vancouver Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Cowie-Freitas also taught in elementary schools. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling and attended reunions. Mrs. Cowie-Freitas was a member of the Pacemakers, a choir from Grants Pass, Ore. Survivors include one daughter, Joan Ford of Grants Pass, Ore.; three sons, David Cowie of Black Canyon City, Ariz., Steven Cowie of Chandler, Ariz., and Gerald Cowie of Grants Pass, Ore.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
