Bakersfield (CA) Californian Tuesday, March 19, 2002, p B2 Services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at 2pm for Orville Glenn Jr. Orville was born on January 26, 1928 in Bakersfield and passed away March 16, 2002 surrounded by his family. Orville attended local schools and held several jobs in his youth. He joined the U.S. Army at age 17 and after basic training at Fort Ord, California spent the remainder of his Army enlistment in Alaska. When he returned to Bakersfield he began working for Southern Pacific Railroad. Later, he worked at various oilfield supply companies and remained in that field until his retirement. Orville was an active member of the Central Church of Christ. There he was known as the "candy man". He always had a pocketful of candy which he handed out to the children. He had a gentle, patient, and kind spirit. He did his best work from "behind the scenes". You could depend on Orville to get a job done. He was an avid reader and usually had a Louis L'Amour novel close at hand. Orville was fun loving and was known for always having a joke to tell. His patience was demonstrated many times by sitting with his fishing pole and never getting a bite. Fishing trips with "dad" and "grandpa" proved his patience time and again. Orville loved to work with his wood working tools and all members of his family and many friends were the recipients of his gifts. The last few days of his life he was surrounded by his friends and family. He was to them, as they were to him, a source of strength and inspiration. Orville leaves behind his loving wife of 54 years, LaVerne; son, Rick Glenn of Salinas; daughter, Shelia Pafford and son-in-law Dan of Dos Palos, California; grandsons, Seth Pafford of Denver, Aaron Glenn and wife Donna of Bakersfield, Clay Pafford of Searcy, Arkansas, and Cameron Glenn of Bakersfield, granddaughters, Amy Pafford of Clovis, CA, and Amanda Glenn of Bakersfield; great grandchildren Elizabeth and Ezra Glenn; a sister, Freda Butler, of Clovis, California. Also surviving Orville are nephews Grant Glenn and wife Chris of Gresham, Oregon; Gary Butler of Clovis, California; and niece Pam Roberts of Washington. Orville also leaves behind his special "coffee buddy" and friend, Glenn Knox of Bakersfield. Donations in remembrance of Orville may be made to the American Heart Association.
